EuroCLIC: The European Network for Content and Language Integrated Classrooms

What is EuroCLIC?
EuroCLIC is a European Network which aims to include as many practitioners, researchers, teacher trainers, policymakers and other players in the field of CLIL as possible. EuroCLIC focuses on programmes which entail the use of a modern foreign language as the language of instruction or content and language integrated learning for non-language subjects.

What are the aims of EuroCLIC?
This network aims to have an active role in promoting exchange of information, experience and materials between the different categories of players in the field of content and language integrated teaching as well as promoting their interests at a national and European level. EuroCLIC seeks to build on existing networks and initiatives, not to duplicate them.

How does EuroCLIC function?
The Network is designed around the following instruments:

  • The Secretariat: responsible for co-ordinating all network activities, keeping track of membership, written correspondence with members and associates, and the general day-to-day running of the network.
  • An e-mail newsletter which offers opportunities to place requests for project partners, provide members with information on research, advertise courses et cetera.
  • Occasionally, CD ROM’s, publications, bulletins and conferences.
  • The World-Wide-Web site (www.euroclic.net) with information about the network, electronic registration forms, links to other European and national organisations involved in content and language integrated programmes, a calendar of events, the downloadable text of the bulletin, and a chatroom which will provide a forum for participants to exchange views and information.

The network is coordinated by the European Platform for Dutch Education (The Hague, NL) in co-operation with the University of Jyväskylä (Jyväskylä, FI).
Organisations that have been involved in the development of the network include the European Commission (Socrates/Lingua) that has sponsored the initial phases of the network, the Universities of Lancaster (UK) and Uppsala (S) and the Office Régional du Bilinguisme (Strasbourg, FR).

The responsibility of the network does not rest with the coordinators alone, however. Its success depends on the active contribution of the network members to both the bulletin and the internet site.
