Content and Language Integrated Learning in the European Spotlight

CLIL is a dual-focussed educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and language.

This book provides insight into how CLIL is being carried out in 20 European countries. Complementing the national profiles reported in Content and Language Integrated Learning in Schools in Europe (Eurydice, 2006), the authors describe various attributes of good practice as found in their specific contexts. This involves focus on the linguistic situation of the respective country, the local ‘history’ of CLIL, general associated political and educational factors, types of CLIL models applied, and curriculum development and certification.

This publication is the result of cooperation between the European Platform for Dutch Education and the Council of Europe’s European Centre for Modern Languages, Graz, within the framework of the ECML’s 2nd medium-term programme 2004-2007, Languages for Social Cohesion.

Key Data Teaching Languages
Eurydice, the information network on education in Europe, has produced the 2005 edition of Key Data on Teaching Languages at Schools in Europe. First edition of a special Eurydice Key Data report on language teaching uses 37 indicators to portray the situation in 30 countries in the Eurydice Network.
How many pupils speak one language at home and another at school? How is language teaching organized (in terms of when compulsory provision begins and ends, which languages are taught, how many have to be learnt for what amount of time and what are the official teacher/pupil ratio requirements)? What are the language learning participation rates? How many languages are learnt on average? What are the qualifications of those who teach them?
